William Byron held off Paul Menard in the closing laps to win the Lilly Diabetes 250 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday for his third NASCAR XFINITY Series victory of 2017.
The 19-year-old rookie becomes the youngest driver to win a XFINITY Series race at Indianapolis, coming in his first start in any racing series at The Brickyard.
“It’s really amazing to be here. I’ve got a lot of really great people around me,” Byron said. “It’s a really special moment for us to win at Indy. Great couple weeks and just really proud of this entire race team.”
Byron started third on Saturday and hung around the front of the field for much of the afternoon, winning Stage 1. After playing the pit strategy game with three laps to go in Stage 2, Byron fell back through the field missing out on any additional stage points, but was in prime position to restart the final stage near the front of the field.
